How to Prepare for Your Maternity Session
Scheduling
Best time is between 31 to 36 weeks when the bump is beautifully showing and just before it starts getting uncomfortable. Timing can be different for everyone. For mothers carrying multiples, 27 to 31 weeks is recommended.
Makeup, Hair & Nails
A photoshoot is always a reason to get pampered and feel good, you deserve it! Book a mani-pedi a day or two in advance. Soft natural or gentle French or pastel colours always look great especially for those close up shots of hands on bump. Moisturise your whole body and face a few days before the session. For makeup, I recommend natural daytime makeup with accented eyes and cheekbones and an even skin tone. Avoid heavy makeup, dark eye shadows, and excessive bronzer or tan that can appear as uneven skin tone or streaks. For hair, soft waves, a blow out, or hair up with a few strands falling down looks beautiful and elegant.
Wardrobe
We will first chat about the location you would like for your session. You can bring up to 3 outfit changes so you can mix it up. Most popular options: a long infinity dress that can be draped in different styles; a flowy long dress, off shoulder sleeves for a classic touch (usually multi-layer chiffon or silk); a fitted dress to enhance the lovely bump; bandeau tops and maxi skirt; any flowy fabrics (chiffons, silk) draped around you to create that dreamy image. Avoid: deep cleavage, mini dress or skirt (bump can pull it up); patterns, stripes and logos as they can be distracting; visible or pressing bra straps. Solid colours are best — earthy tones or pastels. Less is more, especially for photos meant to be timeless.
Partner
Your partner should wear clothes that complement your outfit. It does not have to be an exact match but keeping to the same tones, shades and fabric style makes the image look seamless.
